چکیده

1. The action of excess of retinol on chick limb-bone rudiments cultured in chemically defined media has been investigated. 2. After 6 days in vitro, the hexosamine and hydroxyproline contents of the retinol-treated rudiments were much less than those of their paired controls. 3. Synthesis of these compounds, however, was not correspondingly decreased. 4. The control rudiments released hexosamineand hydroxyproline-containing materials into the culture medium; a greater proportion of the hexosamine and hydroxyproline synthesized was liberated from the retinol-treated than from the control rudiments. 5. Although hydrocortisone in physiological concentrations prevented excessive hydration of the rudiments in culture, it did not significantly inhibit the changes induced by excess of retinol.

Metabolism of connective tissue in limb atrophy in the rabbit.

In previous experiments in adult rats (Slack, 1954, 1955), massive tissue atrophy was induced by denervation and femoral head dislocation of one hind limb. A study of the metabolism of total collagen, total sulphated polysaccharide, and mixed muscle protein indicated that disuse atrophy does not imply cessation of all protein or polysaccharide synthesis. After the onset of atrophy some synthesi...

Content and synthesis of glycosaminoglycans in the developing lung.

The function of lung is fundamentally linked to the connective tissue composition of the alveolar interstitium. The composition and synthesis of one class of interstitial connective tissue components, the glycosaminoglycans (GAG), was determined in lung parenchyma of rabbits at different stages of development. Parenchymal GAG content ranged between 0.2 and 0.4% (wt/wt) of dry weight, with highe...

A Case and Literature Review of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus in Mixed Connective Tissue Disease

Normal Pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is characterized by gait apraxia, urinary incontinence, and dementia. Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease that has never been reported to cause NPH. Our patient was a 67-year man with a one-year history of gradual worsening gait and balance, urinary urgency with urge incontinence and decreased short-term memory. P...

THE SMOOTH MUSCLE CELL I. In Vivo Synthesis of Connective Tissue Proteins

These studies have examined the ability of smooth muscle cells from developing aorta of the prepubertal rat to utilize amino acids in the synthesis and secretion of connective tissue proteins. Prepubertal rats, previously given either an alcohol carrier or estradiol-17beta, were each given an intravenous injection of proline-SH. The animals were sacrificed after 15 and 30 man, and 4 hr. Light a...
